Japan's fascinating, misunderstood adult culture
#Japan 🇯🇵 has one of the most fascinating, and misunderstood, adult cultures I’ve ever explored 👀.
I went on this amazing RLD experience with a Japanese comedian @meshida_comedy who really opens your eyes to what’s going on behind closed doors!
It’s also a great reminder that every culture has its own way of thinking about intimacy, relationships, pleasure, and se//uality. Things that seem completely “normal” in one country can seem wild in another.
A few things I learned (… among MANY!):
🇯🇵 🚫 Paying for “P in the V” is technically illegal under Japan’s legal definition of x-work.
❤️ There’s a famous legal loophole that many people refer to as the “falling in love” loophole. (The reality is a bit more nuanced than that, but it’s one of the most interesting parts of Japan’s adult industry.)
👠 “Fashion Health” has absolutely nothing to do with fashion. It’s actually a type of adult entertainment business offering special services that stop short of intercourse and involve a lot of costumes and cosplay.
🤝 You can even rent a boyfriend or girlfriend, for companionship, conversation, sightseeing, or simply to hold your hand. More intimate activities are not supposed to be part of the service. (Should I rent me a bf next time!?🤣)
🍆 And yes… Japan has fertility festivals where giant phallus sculptures are paraded through the streets! While they often go viral online as “peen festivals,” they’re rooted in Shinto traditions celebrating fertility, healthy childbirth, prosperity, and good fortune.
(I think we will eventually need an equivalent to that for the lady parts…am I right!?😉)
One of my favourite things about traveling ✈️ is discovering how differently people approach intimacy around the world. My goal isn’t to judge or sensationalize, it’s simply to learn, stay curious, and bring you along for the ride.
Which fact surprised you the most? 👀👇
