Almaty, Kazakhstan: not what I expected
🇰🇿Almaty, Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
…not what I expected. At all.
If your only reference point is Borat (like mine 😂)… just know: it’s WILDLY inaccurate 😅
This city is honestly one of the cleanest, most modern places I’ve been to.
Like… glass buildings, big boulevards, luxury brands, cute café.
What I learned:
✨Kazakh people are GOOD LOOKING. Like damn.
✨ Contrary to what I was told, medical system is GREAT! Based on our excellent experience! (Gab got super sick!)
✨ City surrounded by mountains is always a plus in my book! 🗻 But the weather was grey and moody most of the time so we couldn’t go visit them 😕
✨Most aggressive drivers I have ever encountered 😳
✨I didn’t exactly get the full culinary experience, but I don’t think I’m a fan of Kazakh food. It didn’t really wow me.
✨ One of the safest cities ever! And I’m saying that as a woman. You can walk around by yourself at night and not always look over your shoulder.
✨VERY quiet city.
✨ Most people speak Russian.
✨ The name “Alma” means apple and it is believed to be the original home of apples! 🍎
✨ I was only there a few days and tried to find some seggs professionals to speak to. I wasn’t successful 😕
✨From the little I learned, in Almaty, even seggs work follows the same rule as seggs: it exists… just not in public. It’s a modern city but it’s a private culture. 🌶️
I would definitely visit again during high season. Just like back home in Canada, April time of year is kinda grey and moody and the city is just starting to come back to life after the winter.
Almaty has over 100 fountains ⛲️ scattered across the city and they are in FULL bloom in summer time! And people spend a lot of time hanging out in these public spaces.
So Almaty needs a redo!
